Established in 1962, SLAC is a national basic research laboratory for experimental and theoretical research in elementary particle physics, development of new techniques in high-energy accelerators, and elementary particle detectors. It also undertakes a broad program of research using synchrotron radiation. Located on 425 acres of Stanford property west of the main campus, the laboratory operates under a contract with the US State's Department of Energy.
