Action Groups Aimed at Social Reconstruction (AGRASR) are Elderly Self-Help Groups promoted under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The initiative encourages senior citizens to form Self-Help Groups (SHGs) where they can spend their time constructively, interact with their peers and participate in productive activities. To receive financial assistance under the scheme, eligible elderly Self-Help Groups function as AGRASR Groups.
The initiative seeks to empower senior citizens through collective participation and encourage active and productive ageing. AGRASR Groups can undertake suitable livelihood and income-generating activities that help make the groups financially sustainable while allowing elderly members to use their experience, knowledge and skills. The scheme also envisages support for rural elderly Self-Help Groups and livelihood collectives through facilities related to production, processing, training, design, testing, marketing, logistics and access to raw materials.
AGRASR ultimately aims to create functional and self-sufficient groups of senior citizens at the grassroots level, including at the village and Gram Panchayat level. By bringing elderly people together through a Self-Help Group model, the initiative promotes social engagement, economic participation, mutual support and a greater sense of independence and dignity among senior citizens.
